Om Mani Padme Hung (Explanation of the 6 syllables)

i realise its human nature to sometimes compare and compete. some people compare their skill levels in cultivation, some compare their status, some even compare their protectors, who is stronger, who is better. the whole idea of cultivation is to perfect the imperfect and make your buddhist walk wholesome. sometimes, less is more. If you think the longer a mantra is or the more you know the better it is, maybe its time you keep it simple. Simplicity comes from within you, if you use your 以为, 认为 and 觉得 to look at one situation, you often tend to mess it up and it becomes too complex. its not easy, i’m still learning how to do so. like what i used to learn in church, lower your self and bring up your spirit man (vice versa) and like what shifu says, if 我值 is high, then 灵 will be low. (vice versa) it is indeed not easy to find a balance. thats why we take our whole life to cultivate. its not a day or two.

i post this as a reminder to myself and also to refresh my understanding as i chant these 6 syllables everyday. it is easy to chant 108 times or 1080 times or even 108000 times. but to chant and constantly think through and understand the meaning, i guess that comes with practice! =)

Explanation of Six Syllables (with excerpts from shifu’s blog)

Closing the doors to the six realms, free sentient beings from sufferings and to be reborn in Buddha’s Pure Land.

OM closes the door to the suffering of being reborn in the gods’ realm. The suffering of the gods arises from foreseeing one’s fall from the gods’ realm. This suffering comes from pride.

MA closes the door to the suffering of being reborn in the warring gods (asuras) realm. The suffering of these asuras is constant fighting. This suffering comes from jealousy.

NI closes the door to the suffering of being reborn in the human realm. The suffering of humans is birth, sickness, old age, and death. This suffering comes from desire.

PAD closes the door to the suffering of being reborn in the animal realm. The suffering of animals is stupidity, preying upon one another, being killed by men for meat, skin, etc. And being beasts o burden. This suffering comes from ignorance.

ME closes the door to the suffering of being reborn in the hungry ghosts’ realm. The suffering of hungry ghosts is hunger and thirst. This suffering comes from greed.

HUNG closes the door to the suffering of being reborn in the hell realm. The suffering of the hell is heat and cold. This suffering comes from anger or hatred.

next time when you chant this, check on your pride, jealousy, desire, ignorance, greed, anger & hatred. make sure you clear your mind off all these before you recite!  =)

cheers!
